More about this plant
‘Red Star’ is a colorful cultivar of white cypress, a needled evergreen tree or shrub in the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Its foliage changes with the seasons: silvery blue in spring, deep blue-green in summer, and rich purple-bronze in winter. That color shift gives the landscape interest in every season.
The parent species is native to the wetlands and bogs of the eastern United States. ‘Red Star’ has local roots: Humphrey J. Welch discovered it in the 1960s at Tennessee Valley Nursery in Winchester, Tennessee.
The genus name Chamaecyparis comes from the Greek chamai (“dwarf” or “low to the ground”) and kyparissos (“cypress”).
