- Flowers
- A flower head with many peripheral petals of various shapes and colors.
- Foliage
- Leaves are alternate, lanceolate to ovate, 3 to 6 inches long and 1 to 3 inches wide, pinnately lobed and toothed.
- Bark & stems
- Stems are green and not aromatic.
- Pruning
- Pinch the tip growth of spring-planted mums regularly to make them branch and bloom well, removing the top half inch to one inch of new growth about every four weeks from 6 inches tall. Stop in early July in the upper Piedmont and mountains or early August at the coast. NCSU adds that cutting back three times in spring and summer, the last around mid-August, keeps plants bushy.
