More about this plant
Mohave is a vigorous firethorn selection growing about 12 feet tall and wide, with arching, open, thorny branches and glossy dark green evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves. Tight corymbs of small white flowers open in spring and early summer and are followed by a heavy set of big orange-red berries that hold well into winter and feed birds when other food is scarce. It is resistant to fire blight and scab, unlike many older firethorns, and NCSU also notes low flammability for this clone. It takes full sun, clay to sandy soil and hot dry conditions, is moderately salt tolerant and deer resistant, and is used for hedges, screens, banks and espaliers. The stems carry sharp spines, so site it away from paths.

- White, five-petaled flowers about 1/3 inch wide with an unpleasant odor, in tight clusters 2 to 3 inches long on spurs of last year's growth, blooming spring into early summer.
- Foliage
- Shiny, dark green, alternate, simple leaves 1 to 2.5 inches long, narrowly elliptic, ovate or lanceolate, evergreen to semi-evergreen with paler hairy undersides.
- Fruit
- Large orange-red pomes in tight clusters that colour in autumn and last well into winter.
- Bark & stems
- Reddish-brown, smooth bark with many lenticels. Young stems are hairy at first, then smooth and glossy, and are covered in spines under an inch long.
- Pruning
- Can become overgrown quickly and needs regular pruning; thorns make pruning difficult. It can be sheared, but severe pruning right after flowering will affect fruit set.
- Native range
- Southern Central and Southern Europe to Iran
