More about this plant
Green Giant arborvitae is a large, woody, needled evergreen tree in the cypress family, a hybrid cultivar developed in Denmark in the 1930s and introduced to the United States in 1967. It grows 3 to 4 feet a year to 40 to 60 feet tall and 12 to 18 feet wide, holding a columnar, dense, pyramidal form, with small glossy scale-like leaves arranged in overlapping rows of four that form flat fan-like sprays, and shaggy brown bark. Upright seed cones up to half an inch long emerge green and mature to brown. It thrives in moist, full sun sites with light afternoon shade, tolerates a wide range of soils and pH, and resists most diseases, insects, drought and deer, but it cannot tolerate salt. It is the standard choice for a fast privacy screen or hedge.
- Full Sun
- Grows to 60 ft tall and 18 ft wide
- Hardy in USDA zones 5-8
