More about this plant
One of the Little Girl hybrid magnolias raised at the U.S. National Arboretum, a multi stemmed deciduous shrub or small tree to about 15 feet. Reddish purple cup shaped flowers open on bare stems before the foliage, and because it blooms later than star and saucer magnolias it suffers less frost damage in the Mid South. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in rich, porous, acidic and well drained soil, avoiding southern exposures that push it into bloom too early. Its size suits borders, patios and small lawns where a larger magnolia would not fit.
- Full Sun
- Grows to 15 ft tall and 25 ft wide
- Blooms in spring
- Hardy in USDA zones 4-9
- Deciduous foliage

- Flowers
- Reddish purple, cup shaped flowers open on bare stems in spring, later than star and saucer magnolias so the buds escape most late frosts.
- Pruning
- Prune after flowering; shape early in the life of the plant to avoid large cuts.
- Native range
- Garden hybrid of Magnolia liliiflora and Magnolia stellata released by the U.S. National Arboretum in 1968
