Plant description
One of the most popular clematis, a deciduous vine covered in star-shaped flowers up to 7 inches across, rich violet-blue with silver undersides, a gardener's favorite since 1876. It climbs 6 to 10 feet in full sun to part shade, and is well suited to trellises, walls, arbors and containers, pairing well with climbing roses.
- Flowers
- Impressively large star-shaped flowers up to 7 inches across in rich violet-blue, with 8 overlapping sepals that are silver beneath and white filaments tinged pinkish to deep red.
- Pruning
- Prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead or weak stems down to a pair of healthy buds, and avoid heavy pruning or flowers are lost. A light trim after the first flush of bloom encourages a second flush.
