More about this plant

Sumner is a pecan of erect, oval to rounded habit reaching 70 to 100 feet tall and 40 to 75 feet wide, grown for its large nuts, borne in clusters of four with good kernel quality and ripening late in the season. Insignificant monoecious catkins appear in spring, and the pinnately compound leaves, over six inches long, turn gold in fall over grey brown bark with rectangular furrows. Give it full sun of six or more hours a day in a well drained neutral loam that stays moist; it tolerates drought. It is a medium growth rate, medium maintenance shade tree that is messy and susceptible to wind damage, suited to a naturalized area, woodland or edible garden.
