More about this plant

Japanese cedar is a woody, needled evergreen tree in the cypress family native to central and southern Japan and China. Short glossy blue green needles about half an inch long are spirally arranged for a foxtail effect, some selections bronzing in winter, and the reddish brown bark peels off in long showy strips. Round brown rosette like cones sit on the terminal branches. It wants organically rich, moist, acidic and well drained soil in full sun to some partial shade with good air circulation and shelter from high winds. Growth is slow to medium, maintenance is low, and it is deer and rabbit resistant, though leaf blights and fungal diseases can appear.
