More about this plant
Japanese persimmon is a dense, erect and rounded fruiting tree of 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide with low maintenance needs. Creamy white female flowers and pinkish male clusters open in mid April, followed by 3 to 4 inch globular orange fruit that is edible, showy and may persist into winter. The glossy oval leaves reach 6 inches long and turn gold, orange and red in fall, and the brownish gray bark is deeply furrowed into rectangular plates. Give it full sun of six or more hours a day in a moist, well drained neutral soil. It suits an Asian garden, an edible garden or a winter garden, and works as a hedge or screen. Fruit drop makes it messy, and scale, mealybug and leaf spot can occur.
