More about this plant

Gala is a propagated apple cultivar, a cross between Kidd's Orange Red and Golden Delicious that originated in New Zealand in the 1920s. It forms a dense, erect, rounded deciduous tree 12 to 14 feet tall and wide with dark green, leathery, serrate leaves. Fragrant, showy flowers start with a pink outer petal tint and open to white blooms in April, followed by pomes that are red over a yellow background with a sweet-tart but mild taste, harvested in fall. Grow it in full sun in moist, well drained clay or loam with high organic matter at neutral pH. The fruit is sweet and aromatic with a fine texture of flesh and is great for cooking, salads and sauces. Expect frequent disease and insect problems. Flowers attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and pollinators.
