More about this plant
Dawn redwood is a deciduous conifer from central and western China, known from 50 million year old fossils before living trees were rediscovered in the 1940s. It grows rapidly to a tall pyramidal form with fine, feathery, fern like foliage that emerges light green, deepens through summer and turns red bronze before falling. Mature trunks are reddish brown, deeply fissured and fluted at the base. Plant it in full sun in clay or organically rich soil with good drainage that is occasionally wet, where it makes a striking specimen or street tree with room to grow.
