More about this plant

Catawba is a multi stemmed, rounded to vase shaped deciduous crape myrtle growing 12 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. Large, long lasting, crepe like dark purple florets are carried in panicles 4.5 to 6.5 inches long from August into October above glossy dark green leaves that turn orangish red in fall, and the smooth brown, multicolored bark adds winter interest. It wants full sun and moist, well drained acidic soil, is low maintenance, and resists deer, disease, drought and urban conditions. Chlorosis can appear in alkaline soils and spent flowers may stain paving.
