More about this plant

Ayers is a European pear grown for its fruit, an erect and spreading deciduous tree with showy white flowers borne in spring clusters with all parts in fives. Glossy, smooth, serrate leaves turn gold in fall, and the large edible pome ripens from summer into fall. It wants full sun of six or more hours a day and a well drained neutral clay, loam or sandy soil, and is a high maintenance tree with frequent disease and insect problems, fire blight chief among them. The flowers draw bees, butterflies and other pollinators and the fruit draws songbirds, and it suits an edible garden, an English garden or a lawn specimen.
