More about this plant

Arnold is a narrow, columnar selection of the native tulip poplar, listed by NCSU at about 25 feet tall and only 8 feet wide, which puts a native flowering shade tree into a space the species could never occupy. In May and June it carries the same cup shaped upright fragrant yellow flowers with six petals and reddish orange bands at the base. The large four lobed leaves with a broad truncated tip turn golden yellow in fall. It wants full sun and an acid, well drained loam that stays moist, and it is a larval host for eastern tiger swallowtail, spicebush swallowtail and viceroy butterflies as well as a nectar source for hummingbirds and bees.
